Anyeonghaseyo,
It is eerily quiet now that the book is off to the printer and there is no more “we’ll fix it in post!”
Last year I watched this mesmerizing video about the book printing process, and found myself awed by the care for craft it takes and all the steps along the supply chain to birth a physical book. The process starts with printing the jacket, and Flawless is beginning that journey next week, I think. There will be lots of corals, as we know from the cover design … but none of y’all have seen the spine yet, which I can’t wait for you to see.
Updates
Book writing is not my primary discipline — making video and audio is. So I’m having a lot of fun messing around with two teenaged-looking dudes named Luke, who are helping me cut together a TikTok book trailer. Books have trailers these days, who knew? Have you seen rad book trailers or booktok content? I’m looking for examples, so please send me some!
First press interview is complete and aired this morning! Whew. WHYY The Pulse did an hour on skincare — what works, what doesn’t, and what dermatologists have to say about the latest frontiers. They get into stem cell microneedling, off-brand uses of Botox and … a conversation with me, about the paradox of beauty work, and how I learned to let myself off the hook. Listen at the link, or on Apple Podcasts, Spotify … wherever you listen.
Those of you familiar with LA know there’s not just one, but two powerhouse public radio stations in town. Both are close to my heart and so both will be doing a Flawless launch event, but in separate parts of this wide metropolis.
KPCC (now rebranded as LAist) will host the public facing launch at its Crawford Family Forum, and I’m thrilled I’ll be in conversation with my friend and thoughtul interviewer Ailsa Chang, the host of All Things Considered.
KCRW, the Santa Monica based station, is putting on a donor event for Flawless, in conversation with one of LA’s favorite hosts, Madeleine Brand.
I’ll share the RSVP pages for all public events once they are set up. And if you know of bookstores or organizations that would be good hosts for Flawless, send me a note and maybe we can collab somehow?
Finally, elisehu.com got a fresh look in time for the book, so the colors are in conversation with Flawless, as well. Test drive it and see if you can break it, as I seem to do with every new tech product or software out there.
I want this to be a useful insider newsletter, so point out what you want to read about that might be missing. Forward to those who should be on the insider list, and your comments, quips and questions are always welcome.
Happy Friday,
E
TikTok book trailers - who knew?? Forget me making suggestions - I'm so far behind the social media curve I learn something new with every newsletter, Elise! 😄
You should work with the Novel Neighbor bookstore when you come to St. Louis (because you have to come to St. Louis!) I know people there and can help facilitate this. They do a lot of great events. Yay for your book being sent to press!
